Today is the holy day of Yud Tes Kislev, the day that the first Chabad Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe, was released from prison in czarist Russia.  Hence the name chag hageulah: the holiday of liberation.

It is also considered the Rosh Hashanah of Chassidus because once the Alter Rebbe was released from prison he was able to spread the teachings of Chassidus. And we know from the Baal Shem Tov that when the wellsprings of Chassidus are spread to the entire world Moshiach will come.

So today is a day connected with Moshiach and redemption and tremendous light.

But what is so special about a day of liberation?

It is not just liberation from a physical prison.  That in itself is a cause for rejoicing. But it is more than that. On this day in the heavenly realms permission was granted for the Alter Rebbe to bring down to this world the lofty teachings of Chassidus to prepare the world for Moshiach. There was an accusation against the Alter Rebbe that resulted in his going to prison. But his release meant that in Heaven that accusation was nullified.

And besides physical release from prision, it is a day of liberation from spiritual imprisonment of any form for all Jewish people. Some people are imprisoned in negative mind sets. Some people are imprisoned in emotional turmoil. Some people are imprisoned in spiritual confusion and depression. Some people are imprisoned in difficult circumstances of life which prevent them from fully expressing their yiddishkeit or their love to Hashem.

So today is a day where the power of liberation is present for each and every one of us to redeem ourselves from any type of impurity, negativity, gezera etc. It is a very powerful day!

Today is the time to make good resolutions in the learning of Chassidus and spreading Chassidus.

It is a day to make peace within ourselves and with others. The Alter REbbe was saying the pasuk in tehilim pada vshalom nafshi….Hashem redeemed my soul in peace…when he received the news that he was free.

This is significant because we all need to redeem our souls in peace: with ahavas yisrael, achdus and love.

When the Alter Rebbe was tormented by the misnagdim, those who opposed chassidus, he never allowed his talmidim to fight with them. He wanted everything done in a peaceful manner.

And this is the attitude we should adopt in life: to try to do everything bdarchei shalom, in a way of peace. Torah itself is peace: all its paths are peace.

So may today truly bring liberation from all worries, fears, problems, sufferings, negativity, impurity, kelipa, hardships and any type of harsh gezeras.

Shana tova blimud haChassidus ubdarchei haChassidus tikasevu vtikasemu: may you all be inscribed for a year of learning chassidus and in the ways of Chassidus.

And may an increase in learning chassidus mamash  bring the Geula shleima, the redemption through our righteous Moshiach!
